U.S.A. Citizens
U.S.A citizens do not require passports or travel documents to travel to Canada. However, U.S.A. Citizens must produce sufficient documentation to establish their identity and citizenship.
The following documents are proof of U.S.A. citizenship. Documents that do not incorporate a photograph should be accompanied by supporting government-issued photo identification (i.e. a drivers licence).
- U.S.A. Passport
- U.S.A. Certificate of Citizenship
- U.S.A. Certificate of Naturalization
U.S.A. Certification of Birth Abroad or Consular Report of Birth Abroad
A U.S.A. birth certificate when accompanied with government issued photo identification may be acceptable proof of U.S.A. citizenship.
U.S.A. Permanent Residents
Permanent residents of the U.S.A. may travel to Canada from the U.S.A. without passports, travel documents or visas. However, if these persons travel to Canada from any other part of the world they require passports (or travel documents) and are visa exempt provided they can substantiate their status as a U.S.A. permanent resident.
The following documents are proof of permanent residence:
U.S.A. Permanent Resident Card
Temporary Resident Card (form I-688) - annotated to indicate permanent residence in the United States. Note: the I-688 card is proof of permanent residence only when annotated. The annotation is a label affixed to the back of the card that bears the following text: "Temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence and employment authorization. Valid for 1 year from the expiration date on the reverse of this I-688. Valid for travel outside the United States if the named bearer has not abandoned his or her residence and is returning after a temporary absence abroad not exceeding one year. Presentation of a valid document will authorize a transportation line to accept the named bearer on board for travel to the United States without liability under section 273 of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This card is void if altered, and must be carried at all times."
A U.S.A. Immigration and Naturalization Service passport stamp "I-551" is used as proof of residence until a Permanent Resident Card is received, provided that the "valid until date" has not expired.
